Year-Long Volunteers at Christ House
Volunteering full-time in the Christ House community (40 hours per week) offers individuals both the opportunity to serve those who are homeless and sick in Washington, DC and live in an intentional volunteer residential community (See Emmanuel House for more information), while gaining career experience or discerning vocation. All year-long volunteers are expected to complete CPR certification prior to start date of volunteer year.

Positions
Year-long volunteers at Christ House fill vital positions, such as staff nurse, nursing assistant, case management assistant, clinical unit assistant, patient activities coordinator, and generalist.
Case Management Assistant: Assist with everyday operations of the case management department.
- Responsibilities include: Verify insurance status of Christ House patients, assist patients with enrollment in social services programs, collect and report social services data, and accompany patients to social services appointments at local agencies. *This position is best suited for an individual interested in a career in case management or social work.
Clinical Unit Assistant: Assist with daily organization and health information management on the nursing unit.
- Responsibilities include: Transcribe physicians' orders, schedule patients' medical appointments at local hospitals, order lab work, update medical records, and answer phones. *This position is best suited for an individual interested in clinic administration and/or public health.
Generalist: Provide assistance to all administrative and patient care departments.
- Responsibilities include: Assist the Christ House Administration Department with human resources, procurement, accounting, in-kind donations, the clothing closet, and other tasks as assigned by the Associate Administrator. In addition, the Generalist supports Christ House patients by escorting them on medical appointments, as well as assisting the Patient Activities Coordinator with planned patient activities. *This position is best suited for an individual interested in exposure to both the service delivery and administrative aspects of a non-profit organization.
Kairos Program Assistant: The Kairos Program Assistant functions as an associate to the Kairos Housing Manager and Kairos Medical Case Manager. The Kairos Program offers recovery and permanent housing to 52 former Christ House patients. Program members live on site in efficiency style apartments, at Kairos House and the Branner apartments, both within walking distance of Christ House. Kairos Program participants are capable of living independently, but due to chronic illness, are unable to hold full-time employment.
- Responsibilities include: Accompany Kairos members to medical appointments, assist Kairos Housing Manager and Kairos Medical Case Manager with daily administrative duties, foster program members' commitment to community service, and create meaningful community building opportunities among program participants. *This position is best suited for an individual interested in building relationships with and between men in a spiritual recovery program and learning aspects of facilities and program management.
Nursing Assistant: Provide direct patient care, including but not limited to activities of daily living and simple dressing changes (under the direction of the Registered Nurse).
- Responsibilities include: Record vital signs, change dressings and assist patients with activities of daily living, such as making beds and taking showers. Maintain safety and cleanliness of clinical unit. On-site training is provided. *This position is best suited for an individual with prior experience working in direct patient care.
Patient Activities Coordinator: Implement activities that provide a forum for entertainment and self-expression for Christ House patients. These activities are vital to the healing and well-being of our patients, as many of them are dealing with complicated illnesses, addiction and depression.
- Responsibilities include: Plan educational, sporting and cultural activities for patients (including both in-house activities and field trips), as well as manage community volunteers, facilitate weekly community meetings, and accompany patients on medical appointments when necessary. *This position is best suited for creative, independent worker who enjoys building patient centered community through individual and group interactions with the patients.
